DIY Gold Rimmed Agate Curtain Tie Backs

filed under

I don’t know about you, but I am completely embracing the natural mineral trend in home decor. And what says that more than agate slices and gold? Several big name brands have agate coasters or door pulls, but they are all so expensive! Even Target jumped on the agate bandwagon with some cheap knock off coasters which were really just glass with an underplaying agate print to make it look like a slice of agate.

If you are like me and want to add some agate to your room decor, why not try this DIY and make yourself a set of gold rimmed agate curtain tie backs?
For this project you will need two agate slices (I got mine at the Evolution store) for only $8 each. But I have also seen them in urban outfitters for the same price, or on Amazon for $10.

You will also need either gold paint (I recommend the Martha Stewart craft paint line) or a Krylon 18kt gold leafing pen (I picked mine up a Joann craft store but you can also get one on Amazon).

For the base of the tie back, I used the Young House Love for Target wall hooks, but I think these ones from Home Depot would work fine too.

Finally you will need some strong glue and a piece of sandpaper. I used Aleene’s fast grab tacky glue

To make the tie backs, I first used my gold leaf pen to color the raw edge of the agate slices. Once dry, I sanded the middle of the back of the coaster enough to rough it up a bit, then sanded the pull face. The last step was to simply glue the agate to the pull. Once dry, I attached the tie back to the wall, and viola!

I also made a pair in pink for my bedroom. And another one has been requested by my daughter, but I have yet to make that one. Have any other fun uses for agate slices besides tie backs and coasters?
