It may come as no surprise to you, but I am currently loving gradients. I love the way the colors mix together and overlap to create a unique pattern, and I especially love how you can achieve the look with just a few cans of spray paint. In an effort to turn everything I own colorful (JK, sort of), I recently gave my bar cart a cotton candy gradient makeover just in time for spring. A few glasses, a shaker, and even a wine opener got the gradient treatment, and I will show you how to recreate the look for yourself.
As it turns out, creating your own gradient set is easier than it may seem. Just a few cans of spray paint and a few bar ware pieces are all you need.
- Montana Gold spray paint in 3-4 colors (I used Lychee, Yolk, Light Malachite, Strawberry, and Shrimp light)
- Glasses, cocktail shaker with a lid that does not overlap the base, a corkscrew
- Painters tape or washi tape
- Spray Shellac
Begin by taping off the top 1/2″ of the glasses. You want to make sure enough of the glass stays paint free so that you aren’t putting your mouth on the spray paint when drinking.
You will also want to tape off the corkscrew portion of the bottle opener. The paint would likely chip off of this during use anyway, so go ahead and keep it it’s original finish.
Then it’s just a mater of spraying bands of paint across the pieces a letting the spray overlap the previous color slightly. You may need to go back over a few of the colors after you have sprayed the entire piece to make sure you have a good gradient.
For the glasses I chose to do bursts of color instead of a banding effect because they were so small.
Once the spray paint is dry, coat them all with a coat or two of spray shellac to make sure the paint doesn’t chip or wear down with use. Let the Shellac cure for 24 hours, and then your pieces are ready to use!
Add the pieces to your bar cart and complete the look with a few gradient plates for food, an ombre bowl for garnishes, and of course a disco ball!

[…] happen really really fast. In 2017 Kailo Chic (I’d argue) single-handedly brought a cheery pink/yellow/blue gradient to the forefront of lifestyle product design. Within 3 months I saw Hallmark cards in Target […]
