DIY It – A Simple Patterned Clock

filed under

I feel like I have been slow going getting back into the swing of blog things since the break, so bear with me. I have been busy behind the scenes working on styling and photographing 4 different wedding themes, and it has pretty much sucked all my time. But I am almost done with them, and I have a few fun DIY projects in the works that I hope to start sharing with you soon. But in the meantime, I wanted to share this super simple patterned clock that I made towards the end of last year and never ended up getting around to photographing. But I finally got a few pictures taken, so, yay! This clock is a fairly simple DIY, but I love that is is so versatile. You can really have it look anyway you please, so bonus points for a quick and customized DIY!

The secret to this colorful patterned clock is… wait for it….wallpaper! Yep, more specifically woven sticky backed wallpaper. I used a piece of leftover sample wallpaper from Spoonflower on mine, but you can pick from any of their thousands of patterns to make your clock just the way you like. Geometric? Sure! Floral? You betcha!

Follow along below for the full tutorial.

The Supplies:

  • Wood Wall Clock Kit (I got mine from Target and their handmade modern collection for $7.99)
  • Adhesive Wallpaper sample (Use what you have or choose from any of the designs on Spoonflower.com, just be sure to purchase the woven wallpaper sample size for this project)
  • Acrylic craft paint and paint brush (optional for the pop of color on the edge)
  • Scissors and pencil

Begin by tracing the wood clock base on the back of the wallpaper sample and cut out the circle.

Remove the backing paper and adhere it to your clock. Feel free to use the squeegee that comes with the sample wallpaper to make sure it is stuck on there well. Next, use a utility knife to cut a small slit in the center of the wallpaper where the hole in the wood clock base is.

Assemble the clock mechanism through this hole and then paint the edges of the clock with the acrylic paint.

Once the paint is dry, your clock is ready to hang. I love this palm leaf look and it has me dreaming of summer again, but I also have a few other leftover wallpaper samples and think I may have to make a few more clocks and hang them all up on a wall as a fun and functional art piece. What do you think?
