DIY It – Huge Colorful Ornaments and Tree Topper

This month I was tasked with using the extra large 8″ and 10″ foam balls. At first I tried my hand at creating a disco ball, but when that totally failed, I stumbled upon one of my favorite crafts to date! So win! I’m not sure if I have told you all about how much I love large scale decorations? If I could have my way, I would totally scoop up all those large store display decorations that go up every season (you know, those hanging things at Target over the holiday section or when you enter the store?) and hang them from my living room ceiling (I have a two story living room, so I think they would look really cool). But since I haven’t reached that level of crazy (yet), I figured the next best thing would be to create my own over sized decorations.

Now I am sure you can find ornaments in the store that are this size (or at least come close), but they are usually in traditional colors and you all know I like a little of the non traditional. These DIY large ornaments can be made in any color you want, so I of course went with shades of pink and blue!

Follow along below for the full tutorial, plus learn how to turn your large ornaments into a tree topper! What the what?!

The Supplies:

Begin by spray painting your foam balls. I used several different kinds of spray paint, and while they all worked, I think the flat paint looked best. Now spray paint the plastic coffee lids (or PVC pipe cap) gold. Once dry, use the lid to create an indention in the foam.
Then drill two holes in the lid and insert a piece of wire into the holes to create the ornament loop. Use pliers on the inside of the lid to bend the wire together to secure it.
Finally use a bit of the foam glue around the indention in the ball and glue the lid into place.
Once dry, you can choose what you do with the large ornaments, whether it is using them as decorations on your bar cart, hanging them from your ceiling, perching them on your mantel, or using them as a tree topper!
For the tree topper, just cut a X slit in the bottom of the ornament with a foam knife (or regular serrated knife) and push it onto a top branch or the top stub of your tree. Now that I have one, I’m pretty sure everyone needs an ornament topped tree in their lives!
