I recently came across the cutest plain white ceramic hexagon plates at Target, and you know that I can’t pass up a hexagon! So I purchased a few and came home to turn them into abstract art plates perfect for breakfast or dessert. Today I will share with you how to paint your very own plates to turn them into mini works of art perfect for all your snacking needs.
Are these not just the best plates ever?! And between the hexagons and colors used, there is something about them that is kind of reminiscent of a bee hive. Which makes me think of honey and breakfast time, which these plates would be perfect for. Now, although they may look complicated, I promise they don’t require that much work, and they are well worth the time investment. Follow along for the full tutorial.
The Supplies:
- White Ceramic Hexagon Plates
- Non Toxic Multi Surface Paint
plus Gold
for the edges
- Paint Brush
- Oven to cure the paint
Begin with the darkest shade of the color that you are painting your plate. For this example, I am painting the blue plate so I started with the darkest shade of blue that I had and painted around the edge of the plate.
Remember that this is abstract, so there is no need for it to be precise, just paint the edge and down onto the plate about 1/3″. Now you will move on to the next lightest color and paint around the inside of the first color blue, overlapping just slightly.
Now mix a bit of the white paint with the lightest blue and paint in a circular motion to fill in any remaining white spots in the center of the plate. The final step is to carefully paint a gold edge around the plate. This step is optional, but I like how it finishes off the plate.
To cure the paint you can either leave the plates out to dry for 3 weeks (ain’t nobody got time for that!), or place the dry painted plates (let the paint dry for at least an hour after painting it) in a cold oven, heat to 350°F, let bake for 30 minutes at 350°F, and then turn off the oven and let the plates cool back down in the oven. Remove after the plates have fully cooled.
I love the depth and interest created by using this abstract paint method. Sure you could always paint them a solid color, but I like the swirl and lightening of the color as you move to the center of the plate. It makes them stand out!

How well do they wash? Dishwasher safe?

Once cured you can hand wash them, but I wouldn't put them in the dishwasher.
