You may have already guessed by my several food and baking posts, that I love to cook and bake. With parents that owned several restaurants when I was younger, it’s no wonder that I have the love of food! My sister even followed their footsteps and became a pastry chef. But, with as much as I love to cook, I am a mess in the kitchen. My spice cabinet is filled with almost empty jars, little plastic bags filled with bulk spices, and other random oddities. I figured it was high time to clean up the space and create an area that not only functions better, but looks pretty in the process. That is when I decided to make these colorful color-blocked spice jars.

These will definitely make cooking more fun and pretty and help me get rid of all those zip bags of spices. Each jar was only $1, so this project is as affordable as it is pretty!

The Supplies:

• Plain glass spice jars (I used ones from World Market)
• Acrylic Multi-Surface Craft Paint
• Painters Tape
• Paintbrushes
• Gold Spray Paint and Shellac (optional)

The first step was to unscrew the silver lids and spray them gold. I just sprayed the outside so that none of the food would come in contact with the spray paint surface. Once dry, you can give them a coat of shellac to help seal the gold paint and prevent it from getting all fingerprint-y.

Now for the jars themselves, give them a good wash and dry, then a swab with a bit of alcohol to make sure they super clean. Once dry, tape off a portion of the jar and use your craft paint to paint the bottom portion of the jar.

 My jars took 2 coats of paint, so paint one coat on all the jars and then come back and paint a second coat. Once the paint is dry, remove the tape and let cure for several days before filling them with your spices.

I love the way the colorful spices add another layer of the color-blocking look to the jars. I tried to pair the spices with a jar color that was complimentary. Of course if you have a bunch of spices you may want to use a paint pen to write the name of the spice on top of the paint. But I can tell mine apart, so I didn’t bother with that step.

The only problem that I have now is that I want these jars out on the counter for everyone to see! They are just too pretty to be hidden in a cabinet. By the way, don’t you think these would be awesome filled with sprinkles too?!
