Make It – Rainbow Tie Dye Peeps

filed under

Oh, yes you heard that right! You can DIY your own rainbow tie dye peeps just in time for Easter. These colorful bunnies are sure to excite your inner child. I mean how can you go wrong with colorful marshmallow goodness?!

I am not really sure why these aren’t already a thing out there on the market. Because just looking at the swirled colors makes me happy.

I adapted the original recipe for tie dye marshmallows from Studio DIY. Follow along for the detailed instructions on how to recreated these for yourself.

Ingredients:

3 packages unflavored gelatin (1/4 ounce packets)

3/4 cup water

1/2 cup water
2 cups sugar
1 cup corn syrup
1 tablespoons vanilla extract

1/2 cup powdered sugar mixed with 1/2 cup cornstarch for dusting
Food Coloring in your choice of colors
Small Cookie Sheet lined with parchment paper

Directions:

1. Prepare your pan and mixing bowls with spoons for mixing the
colored marshmallows. To prepare the pan, line with the parchment paper and dust with the cornstarch and powdered sugar mixture to coat the
entire pan.

2. Mix the gelatin and 3/4 cup of water in your mixing bowl and let sit so the gelatin can bloom
3. Mix the rest of the water, sugar, and corn syrup in a large quart pan and heat
over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Once the sugar dissolves,
raise the temperature to high and use a candy thermometer to get the
sugar mixture to 240 ºF.
4. When the mixture reaches the temperature, turn on the mixer and mix
the gelatin mixture. Slowly stream the sugar mixture into the mixer on
medium speed. Once all the sugar has been added, increase the mixture
speed and mix for appx. 6-7 minutes. Then you will add the vanilla extract and mix for another few seconds until well combined.
5. Divide the marshmallow mixture into the bowls and add your food
coloring and mix until combined. You will want to work quickly before
the marshmallows start to set up.
6. Once the marshmallows are mixed, start by dropping dollops of each
color into the pan. Once they are all added to the pan, use a chopstick
or spoon to gently swirl the mixture to create a marbled effect.

7. Dust the top with more of the powdered sugar mixture and let set for several hours to overnight to set up.
8. Once set, use a peep bunny cookie cutter (I found mine at Joann Fabric and Craft Stores) dusted with cornstarch to gently cut the marshmallows into peep shapes. Dust the edges of the peeps with more cornstarch/powdered sugar and then enjoy with graham crackers or as is!

Now aren’t these fun?! How do you like to enjoy your peeps? Melted in between two graham crackers or as is straight out of the package? However you enjoy them, these rainbow ones are sure to bring even more joy to your Easter snacking!
