Bake It – Easy Heart Doughnuts

Okay, so I have to admit that I love doughnuts! But they have to be fresh. As in right out of the fryer. Warm, soft, and oozing with icing. I have found a way to replicate the fresh doughnut taste at home without the need to make the dough and let it rise. My secret is a can of biscuit dough! Yep, just open the can and fry them up and they taste just like they came from your favorite doughnut shop. Today I modified my method slightly to create these delightful little easy heart doughnuts just perfect for Valentine’s day morning.

The process is really just as simple as I stated above. You will need:

  • A can of refrigerated biscuit dough
  • Large and small heart shaped cookie cutters
  • Oil for frying
  • A food thermometer
  • A can of vanilla icing dyed into a few fun pastel colors (or you can just make simple powdered sugar icing)

Begin by filling a quart pot with your oil and heating for medium until the oil reaches 375°F. While the oil is heating, begin to cut your biscuit dough. You will need to flatten them slightly to cut out the heart shape with the large cutter, then the inner heart shape with the small cutter (this is optional as I made a few without the center cut out and they fried up just fine).

When your oil reaches 375°F, reduce the heat to low and begin frying your doughnuts a few at a time for about 1-2 minutes per side. You want them to get that nice golden color on each side. Then pull them out and let them set on a few paper towels to cool slightly. Once you have fried all your doughnuts, use the colored icing to ice the doughnuts and top with sprinkles if you wish.

Now wasn’t that simple? And they are just the cutest way to celebrate Valentine’s morning with the family. Trust me when I was taking these pictures there were several little kids hovering just waiting for me to let them dig in! You won’t believe how good that taste either!
