I realize I have already shared several DIY ornament ideas with you all this year, but I have just one more that I have to share. Why? Well, besides the fact that they are too cute not to share, they are also a part of a huge giveaway contest that I am a part of along with several of my blogger friends and Expressions Vinyl. Each of the bloggers in the contest was given a Christmas pack of vinyl which included two shades of red and green, gold, and silver adhesive vinyl and asked to create an ornament. Then you all get to vote on your favorite (it’s mine, right?) for a chance to win $100 gift card to Expressions Vinyl!
So now that you are excited, let me share how you too can make your own ugly sweater ornaments using vinyl and your Silhouette Cameo (or similar vinyl cutting machine), then you can click on over to cast your vote.
Now I realize that some of them are not quite as tacky and ugly as some real life sweaters I have seen, but it was a fine line between cute, ugly and ugly, ugly and I played it cute with my ornaments.
The Supplies:
- Clear Glass Disc Ornaments
- Acrylic craft paint (I used green, lime green, and white)
- Red, Green, and Gold adhesive vinyl
- Silhouette Cameo
- This cut file
Begin by painting the inside of your ornaments. Remove the cap and squirt paint into the ornament. Swirl the paint around inside the ornament until it is fully coated with paint. Tip the ornament upside down and allow for the extra paint to fall out of the ornament onto a piece of paper or cardboard. You can leave the ornaments upside down overnight to allow the paint to dry.
While the paint is drying, cut out your vinyl using the cut file I provided above. You will want to set your vinyl cutter to a very low cutting speed (I used a speed of 2 on my Silhouette Cameo). This is because the images are very tiny and the slower speed keeps them from getting pulled up by the blade when it is cutting the vinyl.
Once you have all your colors of vinyl cut, remove the negative space to reveal your cut pieces.
Using either your fingers or masking tape, remove the cut vinyl pieces and create your own ugly sweater ornaments using the different images. There is no wrong way to do this, it is an ugly sweater after all! Just layer the moose, trees, holly, and triangles to create your own unique sweater image.
Once all your ornaments are uglyified, hang them on your tree or use them as party favors for your ugly Christmas sweater party!
Now that you have seen my ornament (it should totally be the winner right?), go here to vote for it and enter to win $100 gift certificate to Expressions Vinyl and see the 19 other ornaments the other bloggers made with the same vinyl pack.
