On almost every Ikea run that I make, I always tend to pick up extra things that I don’t have any use for or things that I think would be cute if hacked in some way. But usually what ends up is a pile of extra things that I never get around to using. Is that just me? Or are you all guilty of the same thing?
This trio of wicker baskets started out as one of those long forgotten things I picked up once, but I finally got around to making something out of them! Yay! With a little bit of jewelry wire, I was able to turn them into hanging basket planters for some faux greenery.
Aren’t those the perfect gallery wall addition?! And can you believe that greenery is faux? They make some pretty realistic looking greenery these days!
Supplies:
- Fryken Ikea basket trio
- 20 gauge gold jewelry wire
- Pliers
- Faux greenery
Begin by removing the lids. Cut a 10-12″ long piece of jewelry wire and fold in half and twist to create a loop on one end. Thread the end of the jewelry wire through the hole in the bottom of the basket up and into the basket and fold upward. You will end up with the loop on the bottom of the basket and the extra jewelry wire inside and bent upward inside the basket. Feel free to add a dab of hot glue to keep the wire in place.
The last step is to add your fake trailing greenery and hang the loop on a screw or hook on the wall. Simple!
Now if you would prefer real plants instead of fake, you will want to line the basket with waterproof pond liner or landscape fabric. To do this cut landscape fabric to size and glue it into place inside the basket. Make sure you do this step after you have added the wire hook. Once your glue is dry, you can add dirt and your plants to turn the basket into a real living wall piece.
I am loving my new plant wall art though and can’t believe this project was so quick and inexpensive! I think I need to go back to Ikea to get a few more baskets!

I may need to try this once I get our place put together! Did you get the faux greenery at IKEA as well?

Actually, that was from Joann fabrics (but any craft store should have some).
