Decorate It – A Halloween Mantel

filed under

Happy October! Since we are officially in the month of Halloween, I figured I could justify finally making over my mantel into Halloween central. Today I want to show you how I designed my mantel this year as well as give you a few creative ideas on how you can spookify (that is totally a word!) your own mantel.

Lets start out with the full shot of my mantel in all it’s Halloween glory. Or should that be gory? Just kidding.

The main feature of my Halloween mantel this year is my mirror monster. I found these fun giant googly eyes at Michael’s craft store and thought they would be good to use when decorating for Halloween. I paired them with some white vinyl that I hand cut into jagged monster teeth, and viola! The mirror that usually sits up on my mantel was easily transformed into a monster mouth with monster eyes! I added a few spider stickers crawling up into the monsters mouth for a little something extra (I picked up these stickers in the Target dollar spot).

The other big focal point of my mantel was
the bats on the branches. This project was pretty simple as well. I just scavenged the back yard for a large branch (I actually pulled this dead branch out of a tree) and then placed it in one of my large vases and taped a few Martha Stewart Bats to the branches. Instant creep factor!

The final aspects of the mantel were of course pumpkins (both real and fake), a few signs, and a Happy Halloween banner. The pumpkins and signs were all purchased from Target, and the banner is the Martha Stewart Crafts Happy Halloween Garland

The main things to remember when decorating your own mantel is to add varying heights, dimensions, colors, and throw in something unexpected (like my monster mirror). Now get to decorating!
