DIY It – Colorful Swan Appetizer Plates

filed under

My design idol Joy Cho from Oh Joy! is at it again with her new collection for Target. I, of course, had to restrain myself from purchasing it all, but I did walk away from the aisle with the cocktail shaker with rose gold accents and the mini color dipped rose gold appetizer forks. I already had the copper Moscow mule mugs, so all that was left between me and a colorful rose gold party were a few plates. Drawing from the swans present in the rest of the collection, I created a set of colorful swan appetizer plates to match the colors of the little forks. Now I am all set for that colorful fall party!

Aren’t they just so fun?! And how about that copper edge?! Love it! Follow along below for the tutorial on making your own.

The Supplies:

  • Plain white ceramic salad plates (I used these)
  • Silhouette Cameo 3 (or an older model, I was given a Silhouette Cameo 3 to try out and I love the self adjusting blade feature so much that I highly recommend using one to cut thick and difficult materials like the metallic foil vinyl I used for this project)
  • Adhesive vinyl
  • This swan cut file
  • Multi Surface Paint Set (this one works well)
  • Paint Brush
  • Copper Leafing Pen (optional for edge detail)

Begin by using the cut file and cutting your vinyl. You will need one swan per plate that you want to paint. These cutouts will be your stencil.

Clean and dry your plates and then wipe them with rubbing alcohol to make sure they are clean and ready to take the paint. Place your swan on the plate and then use the paint color of your choice (you may need to custom mix colors to match the fork colors) to paint the plate. Let dry and add a second coat if needed. Use a pair of tweezers to removed the swan once the plate is just slightly dry. If you wait too long the paint may come off with the vinyl when you remove it.

Alternatively, use the negative space vinyl piece around the swan cut out as a stencil to paint a colorful swan on the plates. Let dry for a minute and then remove the vinyl.

Let the paint dry on the plates for about an hour, then place the plates in a cool oven, heat to 350 °F and bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, turn off the oven and let the plates cool in the oven. Finally, use the copper paint pen to color just the edges of the plates.

I am usually all about that gold, but I am really loving these copper/rose gold accents this fall. And how about those swans, huh? The best part about this tutorial is that you can modify it and use any shape that you like for your plates. Maybe swans aren’t your thing? Then how about a faceted diamond shape, a palm leaf, or even a cactus. The colors and design are only limited by your imagination!

    Hello,
You can eat out of these?
    Aren’t they toxic?

I used a non-toxic food safe paint that is safe for food use.
