I fully intend on milking palm leaves and summer vibes for all they are worth this summer. I have been loving my DIY palm leaf fireplace makeover so much I decided to sew a few shaped monstera leaf pillows for my couch to complete the summery look. They were surprisingly easy to make and with one little trick, they came together in about 20 minutes each. Yay for new pillows!
The Supplies:
- Different shades of green flannel (about 1/2 yard for each pillow)
- Chalk
- Scissors, thread, and sewing machine
- Poly-fil
- Fabric glue and clothes pins or clips
Begin by folding your fabric equally in half and use the chalk to draw a monstera leaf on the fabric.
You will want to draw it so that the leaf segments are thick and the space between each is very thin. Be sure to fill up as much of the half of a yard as possible. The bigger the pillow, the easier it is to turn right side out and stuff.
Once your leaf is drawn, use your sewing machine to stitch over the chalk lines leaving 4″ open at the bottom of the leaf. Then use your scissors to cut out the pattern keeping about 1/4″ away from the stitched line and cutting all corners.
Once fully cut out, turn the pillow inside out through the 4″ opening and use a chopstick or other thin but not sharp object to push out all the leaf pieces. Then stuff with the poly fill making sure to get it into the tips of every leaf piece. Once full, use the fabric glue to glue the opening closed and use the clothes pins or clips to clip the fabric opening together while the glue dries. Once dry, remove the clips and your pillow is ready to use!
If you made your leave piece too far apart and your pillow looks more like an multi armed alien, you can hand stitch the leaf pieces together to create a more leaf like shape like I did for the large teal pillow.
I had so much fun making these shaped pillows. Surprisingly, this is the first time I have made a shape other than square and it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Especially since I used the chalk and sewed the pillow before cutting. Such a time saver!
Now that I am a pillow pro (that’s a thing, right?!), what other pillows would you like to see? Let me know!
