I blame it on my kids, but I have really gotten into making surprise balls. My kids love unwrapping the little toys and trinkets inside and they are such a snap to make. Plus they can easily be made in any shape or design, so they are an easy craft to whip up for parties in any theme you need.
For the holidays this year, I decided to make ornament shaped surprise balls and turn them into an advent calendar! Now my kids can unwrap one ornament surprise ball each day leading up to Christmas. Inside are small trinkets, temporary tattoos, and activities like baking cookies, dancing to Christmas music, and buying a new holiday themed book.
Materials:
- Crepe paper rolls or flat sheets in several colors
- Plastic ornament caps (I pulled these of mini ornaments from the Target dollar spot)
- Number stickers
- Trinkets, toys, and little messages
- Hot glue
Start with one toy and begin to wrap the crepe paper around it until it is well covered. Then add another toy and wrap again. Try to shape the ball when wrapping it so that it becomes a sphere as best as possible. When you come to the end and all the toys are covered and it resembles a ball, add a dab of glue to secure the end.
Next, glue on the ornament cap and add your number stickers so you know which ball to open each day.
I know my kids are so excited to start unwrapping these as we count down because I heard “can I open one” no less than 50 times while making and photographing these. Hahaha. Do you do advent calendars with your kids? In the past I made a little advent box calendar that I put pieces to a lego kit in so that they can slowly build the holiday themed kit as they count down. I have also done the activity a day calendar.
Maybe next I will make an adult countdown with little bottles of schnapps and chocolate. Now that would be fun!
