Can you believe that this is not made of actual concrete? Yep, this cute little planter/key holder is actually made of foam and is my project for this month’s Flora Craft® Make It: Fun® challenge.
I love that I didn’t have to work with messy concrete for this project, but it still turned out just how I envisioned it. Follow along below to see how I made it!
- Flora Craft® Make It: Fun® Foam Blocks: 12″ by 12″ by 1″
- Flora Craft® Make It: Fun® Smooth Finish
- Spatula or putty knife
- Sanding brick
- Paint brush
- Flora Craft® Make It: Fun® Foam glue
- Flora Craft® Make It: Fun® Foam cutter
- Folk Art Painted Finishes Faux concrete textured paint
- White paint pen
- Copper metallic paint
- Ruler
- Faux Succulents
- Copper Wire and Pliers
Begin by using your ruler and foam knife to cut the bottom 3″ of foam off your block. Then use the smooth finish and spatula to coat the foam. You will want to press the smooth finish into the foam and then use the spatula to smooth it out a bit.
Let the two pieces dry overnight and then use a sanding brick to sand the smooth finish until it is smooth.
Now, you will want to use the foam glue to glue the two pieces together as seen above. Next, cover the entire piece with the faux concrete paint and let dry. You may have seen me use this paint before, and it had quickly become one of my favorite new craft tools.
Once the paint is dry, use the white paint pen and ruler to add triangles to the upper part of the key stand. Then paint the lower portion copper.
Okay, we are almost done! The final two steps are to add it faux succulents to one side of the stand and to bend the copper wire to form a hook that will hang from the top of the stand and hold your keys.
Hooray! That’s it. You now have a light weight and super cute key holder that you can add to your entryway table. While I only took pictures with one key on each hook, I did test it out with my real keys and it held up perfectly. So in case you were worried about the lightweight foam toppling over, don’t be!
Isn’t it crazy how much it looks like concrete but is actually light weight foam? It’s perfect on my mini console table, but now I just have to remember to use it!
