DIY It – Faux Wood Grain and Succulent LOVE sign

If you follow me on Instagram, then you may have seen me mention a few times how I spent the first two weeks of this month styling and photographing 4 different themed weddings for a client of mine. Along with the styling of these weddings came a few DIY projects, and this faux wood grain and succulent LOVE sign was one of them. Luckily I took a few pictures of the process of making it so that I could share the DIY with you.

Now, I know that you might be thinking that this DIY is outside of my normal style of color, but I love the delicate flowers and succulents mixed with the wood grain. And you may not know that although I am drawn to bright bold colors first, I also love boho style, mcm style, and industrial design. I sort of like all the design styles, and I think this LOVE sign is just perfect for a Valentine’s Day mantel (or even a wedding).

The Supplies:
  • 12″ Paper Mache Letters to spell out LOVE
  • Sticky Back Wood Veneer Sheets in Cherry (You will need 2-3 sheets)
  • Utility knife
  • Faux succulents and flowers
  • Hot Glue

You can find all these supplies including the realistic looking succulents on Consumer Crafts.

Begin by tracing your letters on the back of the wood veneer sheets and use scissors to cut the wood veneer into shape. You will only need to trace the L,V, and E. Once your pieces are cut, peel off the backing paper and adhere the wood veneer to the letters. You can do just the fronts like I did, or feel free to do the sides if you want a more realistic wood look.

Now it’s time to work on the O. Begin by using the utility knife to cut just inside the outside edge of the O. Once you have a few inches of the inner ring and outer ring cut, you can use a pencil to run around the edge and separate the top of the letter. Once the top of the O is off, remove the cardboard inserts and use the hot glue to glue in your succulents and faux flowers.
Now that all your letters are done, it’s time to figure out where you want to display your sign. To hang it vertically you will want to hot glue the letters together vertically and then use double sided mounting tape to mount the sign on the wall. If you prefer to display this on your mantel for Valentine’s Day, you can just rest the letters next to each other. Or, if you are really ambitious, you could glue the letters to a piece of stained wood and use it as a table centerpiece for a wedding!
So, what do you think? That wood veneer is pretty cool stuff, huh?
