Sew It – Color Blocked Triangle Pillows

After re-covering my chair cushions a week or so ago, I was surprised at how easy it was to make my own piping and figured I would try a few pillows with gold piping. I used a few jewel tone colors of bottom weight fabric from the craft store to put together some color blocked pillows with champagne gold trim, perfect for fall.

Follow along below for the tutorial on making your own color blocked triangle pillows with gold trim and find out a few tricks I learned along the way.

The Supplies:

  • 1/2 yard each of two coordinating solid colored bottom weight or home decor weight fabrics (you can find several color options here)
  • Gold faux leather
  • 3/8″ cotton piping
  • Sewing Machine, thread, and scissors
  • 18″ by 18″ pillow insert or a bag of polyfil
  • Fabric glue and binder clips (or needle and thread) for closing the opening at the end

Begin by cutting each color of your fabric into 18.5″ by 18.5″ squares, then cut the squares diagonal to create two triangles in each color fabric.

Cut your gold faux leather into 2.5″ wide strips for a total length of 75″ per pillow.

Once all your pieces are cut, begin by sewing the two coordinating colored triangles together to create a new color blocked square; then iron the seam flat. Repeat with the other two triangle pieces.

Now it’s time to create the gold piping. First, sew the leather strips together to create a 75″ long piece. Then, fold the gold faux leather strips in half over the cording and use a cording foot or zipper foot to stitch along the edge as close to the cording as you can get.

Now that all your pieces  are prepped, trim the corners of the pillow case to create a slight, rounded corner, then pin your pillow together. Place the rights sides of the fabric together and pin with the piping in between the two pieces all the way around.

Stitch along the straight edge first and when you get to a corner, cut the piping so that it will curve around the corner of the pillow.

Continue around the rest of the pillow, leaving one end open. Turn the pillow case right side out and stuff in your pillow insert or polyfil.

At this point, you can either stitch the opening closed with a needle and thread or use fabric glue and a few binder clips to glue the opening shut.

Once the glue is dry, remove the binder clips and put your new color blocked triangle pillow with gold piping on display! (maybe a pedestal is appropriate?)

Here are a few tricks I learned: first, look for a faux leather that is very thin and flexible so it can bend around the edges of the pillow easily. Second, cut the corners of the fabric pieces to create a more rounded corner so that the piping will have an easier time curving around the corners. Lastly, cut the piping trim on the corners to allow the piping to curve easier as well.

I love my new pillows and their jewel tones are just perfect for a colorful rich fall look. Have you all ever tried sewing piping into pillows before? I will say that the thin fabric I used for the chair cushion recovering was much easier to work with than the thick faux leather, but with the few tricks I mentioned, I was able to pull it off.

I hope you are inspired to try and create a few pillows of your own. If you do, share them with me on social media by tagging me (@kailochic) and using #mykailochic. I can’t wait to see what you make!
