Did you see me hint a few days ago about a summer party that I styled? Well, that colorful, geometric summer party will be coming to the blog next week! Woohoo! I can’t wait to share the details with you. But in the meantime I am going to share one of the DIY’s from the party, brass himmeli drink stirrers. As I mentioned the party theme was geometric summer, and what says geometric better than himmeli? For those of you not familiar with himmeli, it is a traditional Finnish technique used to turn straw into geometric Christmas ornaments and wreaths. But in the miniature form, it makes the perfect drink stir stick topper.

Isn’t that geometric gold just the perfect touch?! Not to mention it goes perfectly with the new Oh Joy! for Target glasses I got recently. Oh, and if you look closely at the photo above you will see a sneak peek at the party decor!

Follow along below for the full tutorial on how to make your own himmeli drink stirrers.

The Supplies:

• 1/8″ round brass tubing (One 12″ length will make one drink stirrer, this pack has three 12″ pieces)
• Thin gold jewelry wire
• Gold Paper Straws
• Pliers
• Wire Cutter 
• Ruler
• Hot Glue

Begin by measuring and marking your piece of brass tubing into the following: 6 – 1″ long pieces and 4 – 1.5″ long pieces.

Use your wire cutter to cut the tubing on the measured marks. The wire cutter will cut the tubing easily with out squishing the tubing.

Once you have your pieces, you will begin to assemble the himmeli diamond. The first step is to thread three small 1″ pieces onto the gold wire like so.

You will then fold the wire sticking out of the end of the last tube through the beginning of the first tube to create a triangle.

At this point you should have two triangles attached to each other with both wire ends sticking out of the same end. 

On goes the last small tube and the wire gets threaded back through the opposite side to create a pyramid.

Next two of the 1.5″ pieces get put on the wire and it then gets threaded through one adjacent side to create a longer triangle.

At this point you should have both wires stick out of the same end again. You will thread the last large tube onto the wires and wrap the wires around the long triangle wires and twist to secure the himmeli structure. At the bottom add your last piece of 1.5″ tubing and bend the end of the wire up around the tubing.

Now simply hot glue your himmeli piece into the top of one of the gold straws and you have your first stir stick. Repeat as many times as you need.

I personally love the gold color, but you can easily spray paint the brass any color you want and then use different colored straws to fit your party theme. I love how stir sticks dress up your drinks and are one more way to make the most of your party theme.
