I think it is safe to say by now that tassels are the big thing in 2016. I have seen them everywhere from bags to pillows, and I have to say, I am a fan! After seeing a pair of tassel sandals at Target a few weeks ago, I just knew what my next project was going to be. I needed to tassel-ify last years sandals stat, and just in time for the warm summer months.
To my surprise, it was pretty easy to add the tassels and these sandals have quickly become my favorite pair of shoes. I am seriously having to hold myself back from adding colorful tassels to all my shoes!
- Colorful faux or real leather (the lime green is from the craft store and is fake, but the mint leather in the middle is real lambskin leather that I picked up when I was in New York in February. Hubba, hubba.)
- Heavy gauge gold wire cut into 4″ lengths
- Pliers and scissors
- Sandals (I got these at Target last year)
Begin by cutting your leather (real of faux) into strips appx. 1.5″ wide by 5″ long. You will need three pieces per shoe for an extra full tasseled sandal. Once you have your strips, fringe cut the ends leaving about 1.5″-2″ in the center uncut.
Now that your pieces are all fringe cut, start at one side and roll up the leather.
Fold the leather over the strap of the sandal and hold in place. Use your pliers to create a half loop in one end of the wire and wrap it around the leather up near the strap.
Then use the pliers to help wrap the wire the rest of the way around the tassel to create a secure hold.
Repeat with the other two tassels, and then the other shoe. If you happen to have these exact shoes or similar ones, you can wrap the middle tassel around the center strap like I did. Once you have all the tassels on your sandals, feel free to use your scissors to even them up a bit. I went ahead and cut the green tassels a bit shorter than the middle tassel for a bit of variation. Then just kick your feet up an admire your fun new summer sandals.
I am seriously so in love with these sandals now! I have a black pair just like these that I think I need to deck out with hot pink tassels. How fun would that be?
