The great thing is that they are very easy to customize using your favorite colors! Just a bit of felt and HeatnBond iron on adhesive and you will be on your way to a new sweater adorning addiction.
Whether you go for a plain heart, a conversation heart theme, or go for just a few words, everyone is sure to be jealous of your new amazing Valentines gear. Follow along below for the full tutorial.
- A sweater or two (or three!)
- A few sheets of felt (there are some awesome colors on Etsy, or you can just get some from the craft store)
- A yard of Heat and Bond iron on adhesive (from the fabric store)
- Iron and scissors
- Optional Felt Letters (I found these pre-cut valentine’s day sayings at Target)
Begin by cutting out a heart from the felt, then place the felt heart on your sheet of HeatnBond and cutout a piece of the HeatnBond in the same heart shape. Use your iron on the cotton setting to iron the glue side of the HeatnBond to the felt. Let cool and then remove the paper backing. Then place your heart on your sweater where you want and iron on medium-low setting making sure to iron the edges really well. Let cool and check to make sure that the felt heart has fully adhered. If it hasn’t, go ahead and iron again concentrating on the loose areas.
You can either leave your sweater as is with just the heart, or go ahead and use some felt letters to add a little extra somthin-somthin. I love these letters from Target because they are only $1, and they are already the perfect colors and sayings. You can either repeat the process of adhering the HeatNBond to the letters and ironing them on for a permanent bond, or since these specific letters have a sticky back, you can just stick them on for a temporary message just for Valentine’s Day. Then remove them and you have your plain heart sweater back for everyday use.
Or if you don’t want to go to all this hassle and are looking for a fun/temporary V-day outfit. Simple use the sticky felt letters solo like I did on my blue sweater above. They will stay on for the day and you can remove them at any time before washing.
I love my new heart sweater so much! I think that I will be scrounging up old sweaters that I have in my closet to make them new again with a little felt treatment.
