We are in full on summer mode over here and enjoying all the family time and summer adventures, and of course eating way too much! I have even put time aside this summer to spend doing things just for fun, like baking, that I have so little time for anymore. This DIY tropical palm leaf cake is just one of baked so far this summer and I am obsessed. I usually don’t have the time to make a cake, let alone spend any time making it look pretty, so I enjoyed getting to play around with baking. Not only is this cake the epitome of summer vibes, but it so easy to make even if you aren’t a skilled baker. Honestly you could even make this with a store bought cake and a few supplies from JOANN baking section. Win!

Instructions

Begin by rolling out your fondant. I love that Joann carries both large and small fondant packs already mixed into the perfect colors. I grabbed a small lime green and a large regular green. However, I could have gotten away with two small packs of each color for this 9″ cake.

For the monstera leaf, use the fondant tools to cut a loose heart shape out of the fondant that is about 4″ tall.

Next, you will use the same fondant knife tool to cut the leaf shapes out of the heart as shown above. Repeat on the other side and feel free to add a “Swiss cheese” type hole to the bottom of the leaf for a realistic look. Once the leaf is cut, use the opposite end of the knife tool to draw the veining of the leaf. Then pick up the leave and gently adhere it to the icing on the cake draping it over the side of the cake.

Repeat the process a few times to create around 5-6 shaped monstera leaves. Place them around the cake coming from different directions and at different angles.

I wanted a little color variation, so I included lime green banana leaves as well. For these begin by cutting a leaf shape from rolled out lime green fondant. Next, use the poking end of the fondant knife to draw the middle vein. Finally, turn the knife on it’s side and press it into the fondant leaf on each side to create the side veins.
