Okay, so maybe I have taken my love for pom poms to the extreme today. But honestly I don’t care, because how amazing is this giant pom pom cake?! OMG! It is a giant ball cake covered in “yarn” shaped icing and it could not be more fun. Surprisingly easy to do too. Let me show you how!
Supplies:
- 1 sphere cake iced with a layer of white buttercream (you can use the Wilton Sports Ball Pan Set or two round mixing bowls on a cookie sheet).
- 2 batches of your favorite buttercream frosting divided and food coloring added to create 4-5 colors (or you can do all one color too if you want!) I used navy, teal, buttercup yellow, coral (hot pink/orange mixed), and light pink.
- Piping bags (you need one for each color of frosting)
- Wilton No.233 Decorating Tip (if you don’t want to buy one of these for each bag of frosting, get yourself a few couplers so that you can switch the tip back and forth between the bags as you ice your cake)
- Cake Stand
Begin by squeezing the icing out onto the cake in one spot and gently pulling the piping bag and tip away from the cake while still gently squeezing the bag to create several yarn strands.
Now, I recommend starting at the bottom of the cake and working your way to the top. That way you can get all the way to the bottom. I started at the top and by the time I got to the bottom I kept bumping into the icing above with my piping bag and messing it up. So definitely start at the bottom!
Vary your pattern and create groupings of your different colors to create the perfect multi pom pom cake. To do this with the one piping tip, I went in with one color and made abstract spots of that color all around the cake and then came back with the other colors 1 by one and slowly filled in all the spots.
Once your cake is covered in your frosting “yarn” your cake is complete! I must say I am seriously obsessed! And look how perfectly it matches my real multi yarn pom poms!
Now who wants a slice?!

Yes, I would have too, but then I would have had an entire cake that I would have either had to eat or throw away and that would have been such a waste.
