I am officially ready for the cooler temps to start pouring in. After a week of having to stand out in 100+ degree temps waiting for the kids to get out of school, I am officially over the heat. I’m ready for those crisp fall mornings, cups of warm coffee (instead of my summer iced coffee), and cozy fall home vibes.
If you know me at all, you know that I am not a traditionalist when it comes to my decor choices. I like my color to be present in all seasons and fall is no exemption. I do however tend to mute my colors and bit and swap turquoise for teal and navy, yellow for mustard, and tangerine for burnt orange. However, pink is always a staple no matter the season! This fall, I wanted to give my fireplace a little cozy refresh, so I turned to JOANN to pick up all the decor I needed.
Did you know that not only do they sell fabric and craft supplies, but they always have an amazing selection of art work and home decor pieces for each season and holiday? After a quick perusal of their fall decor, I picked up a few pieces plus a ton of yarn for my fall mantel and DIY woven storage basket. Then I got to work transforming my home for fall.
Now that is one colorful and cozy fall mantel don’t you think?!
For the decor, I used pieces from JOANN’s fall art selection. Like the hexagonal mirror, felt flower hanging, felt leaf wreath, and gratefull wood sign. Of course this is a fall mantel, so a few knit pumpkins had to be there too!
For the centerpiece of the mantel, I displayed by giant tassel wall hanging that I made here using yarn from JOANN. Then I filled the mantel shelf with copper candle hurricanes, faux wood Luminaria candles, and a mini faux cactus all from JOANN.
But by favorite part of this mantel has to be the DIY Faux Woven Basket I made using a gray felt woven basket from JOANN, roving, and yarn.
Just look at all that texture and color! I’m in love!!!
Materials:
-Felt Woven basket (I found mine in store at JOANN)
–Roving
–Chunky yarn (I bought teal, navy, coral, light pink, and white)
-Scissors
-Fabric glue or Hot glue
Since this is a faux weaving, I just tucked the yarn and roving into the gaps in the basket. No real weaving was involved. To begin I started with my roving and tucked and folded the roving into the gaps of the woven felt. Then I used a bit of glue to secure the roving.
I did this in a few places with different colors of roving. Next, I created a faux latch hook look by creating a yarn tassel. Just wrap the yarn around your hand 10-12 times, remove and cut one end to create even yarn pieces. Tie the middle with a piece of yarn and tuck the tied end into the basket under the roving sections.
For the last faux weaving texture, I braided several sections of yarn together to form a giant braid and then tied off the end with pieces of yarn. The braid ends were then tucked into the basket and glued into place.
I repeated these three techniques and covered the entire basket with yarn in different colors and textures.
The whole process took me one evening while I was watching TV. So although it looks super complicated, it doesn’t take as much time as a real weaving. And it is so much more functional as a both a storage basket for extra pillows (both of these are from JOANN by the way!) and as an art piece.
I finished the look of my fall mantel with my favorite wicker chair, a pink faux fur throw, and one of my black and white grid pillows. I am so in love with my refreshed fall space! Now I just need these temperatures to cooperate so I can sit in my chair and drink a cup of warm coffee and enjoy all the color and texture on my fall mantel and DIY woven storage basket!

How do you get the perfect wood inside your fireplace. I don’t use mine & LOVE that clean look

It is a faux wood screen. I cut a piece of plywood that fits over the opening to the fireplace and then glued on wood slices that I cut from birch wood logs. So I can easily remove to use if needed, but it gives it a clean look when not in use.
