While today wasn’t the official “lets bake a ton of Christmas cookies” day, I thought it would be fun to make some “just to eat them” cookies.
I found these cute kid and adult aprons and treat bag kits at Target ($ bin for the win!). Seriously cute right?!
I figured today would be the perfect day to whip them out and bake a batch of cookies. Here is Madeline posing with her apron while making the ever so careful sprinkle selection. Sprinkles are serious business!
We used my go to chocolate chip cookie recipe (see the end of the post) and then divided the batch in two. To one bowl we added chopped cranberries, orange zest, white chocolate chunks, and walnuts. These were more for me. To the other bowl we added chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, and walnuts. Both batches then had copious amounts of sprinkles added. Didn’t you know that sprinkles make everything taste better?
Here are the batches post baking:
Once they were cool, we bagged them up and stapled on the cute little cardboard tags that came with the zip top bags. These are perfect for gift giving. I know a few teachers who will be receiving a bag tomorrow!
And the rest of the cookies? Well those made their way over to my cute cake stand. But unfortunate about 5 of them got lost in my stomach on the way. Oops!
And as mentioned, here is the standard recipe I use. Feel free to add whatever goodies you want to the mix:
Cookie recipe:
1 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup rolled oats
2 cups whole wheat flour
2 tbsp ground flaxseed
Have you done any Christmas baking yet? Any family favorites that you just have to make every year?
