Home Tour Tuesday – The Powder Room

filed under

It’s that time again, time for another Home Tour Tuesday post. Today it is all about my powder room. This was one of the first spaces that I started when we moved into our house. I like to start with the powder room because it is small and easy to design on a budget.

When I decided to start decorating this bathroom, I knew that I wanted to go with a dark jewel toned color with gold/brass accents. After several color swatches, I went with Indigo Cloth by Valspar in a flat finish. I went with a flat finish because it is such a small space. The dark flat finish makes the walls recede and almost gives the illusion of fabric. Painting the bathroom this color is what prompted me to use the same color on the adjacent dining room/formal living room ceiling.

After the painting was complete, we swapped out the toilet for a small water conserving toilet and had new flooring installed (the same laminate flooring as the rest of the first floor).  We were able to go with laminate in this bathroom since there is no tub or shower, and the moisture risk was low. Otherwise, laminate is not recommended for bathrooms.

After the bones of the bathroom was complete, it was time for my favorite part. The accessories! I purchased this awesome gold mirror from Joss and Main. I had originally planned on placing it vertically above the sink, but it was much bigger than I thought it would be. So I instead placed it horizontally across both the sink and toilet. This helped bring more reflectiveness into the small space. On the
wall I hung up some gold and black sea urchin like pieces that I picked
up at Target. The mirror is so large and the focal point of the space,
that I didn’t want to put large pieces of art in here and distract from
it.These little sculptures work nicely.

I also put a small circular table (from Target) in here with a little box that I picked up at Home Goods to hide the flushable wipes and a brass crab (just because).

The back of the toilet holds a small gold and glass succulent cage that I picked up at Anthropologie and filled with a faux succulent.

The last piece of the Powder Room was this re-purposed candle holder that I am now using as a toilet paper holder. I found this little gold chevron beauty at Marshall’s and it was the perfect size for several rolls of TP. It is a great reminder to think outside the box when decorating a space.

That is all that I have completed in the powder room so far, but I have plans on adding crown molding, swapping out the toilet paper holder and towel bar for some brushed brass ones, and adding a new light fixture and faucet. I all ready have the crown molding, so hopefully that will go up soon, but the other items are more expensive, so they may have to wait a bit.
All in all it was a quick and inexpensive decorating job with high impact results. And for the obligatory before and after of the space. (The before shot is from the MLS listing photos)
