When purchasing more acrylic to turn into Valentine’s drink stirrers for my shop I found these awesome neon acrylic tubes. I really had no idea what I wanted to do with them, but since they were only $3 each, I figured I would purchase a few different colors to experiment with. After a little thinking I turned them into a DIY modern neon tube flower vase! Neon acrylic and flowers? What’s not to love?!
The company I purchased these from has tons of colors of the acrylic tubes and different diameters and lengths too. I wanted a more sloped look, so I cut some of the tubes with my Glowforge to be shorter (the middle is the 12″ size they sell). But if you don’t have access to a laser cutter you can always leave them all at 12″ tall or try to score them with a pipe cutter and break them into shorter lengths.
Supplies to make your own DIY Modern Neon Tube Flower Vase:
- 5 Acrylic tubes (I used 12″ tall, 3/4″ in diameter tubes)
- 1 x 4 cut to 9″ long
- Drill with 3/4″ drill bit
- Two part epoxy glue
- Acrylic paint (optional to paint the wood base)
Begin by measuring and drilling five 3/4″ in diameter holes into your 1 x 4 piece of wood. You will want to only drill these holes half way into the wood so that there is still a base of wood at the bottom of each hole.
I used my Glowforge for this part too and used it to cut two pieces of plywood (one with holes and one without) and then glued them together, but the method outlined above is perfect for those of you who don’t have a Glowforge.
Once you have your base piece and your acrylic tubes cut to length, fill each hole half way with a two part epoxy glue then press the tube into the holes. This step does two things, first it glues the tube in place and second, it seals the bottom of the tube so that you can actually fill the tubes with water for fresh flowers.
Once the epoxy sets, your DIY modern neon tube flower vase is ready to use! Simply add water to each tube and fill with flowers or skip the water and just use faux like me!
