Splatter paint has been calling my name again and I just couldn’t say no. Maybe I just didn’t get enough painting in as a kid or something, but splattering gold paint everywhere and on everything has just been so much fun! These colorful splatter painted clay candle holders were just a blast to make and just happen to be pretty easy on the eyes and budget too!

The Supplies:

• Air Dry White Clay (I used the crayola brand)
• X-acto knife
• Acrylic Craft Paint
• DecoColor Gold paint pen

 

You will want to begin by getting about a baseball sized piece of clay and work it into a rough log shape.

Use a pen to create a hole at the top and then wiggle the pen to enlarge the opening so that it is large enough to fit a taper candle (roughly 3/4″) and about 1″ deep.

Now that you have your general shape, let the clay set out for about 12-24 hours to harden slightly. Once it has started to dry out a bit, use your X-acto knife to cut off sections of the clay to create a geometric effect. Be sure to also cut off the top and bottom of the candle holder to make them level.

Once the clay is cut, let it dry for another few days. Then it is ready to paint with a coat of acrylic paint. Once the paint is dry, you can splatter the gold paint pen onto the candle holder. I just use a flinging motion to get the paint to splatter out onto the candle holders. But make sure you are doing this outside on a scrap piece of cardboard because it is messy!

 

 

Once the gold paint is dry, your candle holders are ready to use. I made mine in several different heights for added variation, but feel free to make yours tall and thin or short and fat. This same process can be used to make candle holders in any size and shape you want!
