On Friday I mentioned all the things that were inspiring me for the weekend and I am happy to report I actually started work on several projects based on those inspirations. I crafted with confetti, glitter, and flowers, baked with sprinkles, and I even started on my laundry room organization project. So I am going to classify the weekend as a win!
One of the projects that I was able to create this weekend are these super fun faceted marble heart soaps. Among all the other things I mentioned on Friday, the pretty black and gray veining of marble is another one of my inspirations of late. I decided to try my hand at some soap marbling just in time for Valentine’s Day and let me tell you, these little soaps turned out so amazing!
Soap making may seem intimidating, but with the ease of melt and pour glycerine soap, the process couldn’t be simpler. I promise that even my 6 year old could do it!
The Supplies:
- White Melt and Pour Soap Base
- Essential oil or soap scent (optional)
- Black Oxide colorant
- Heart shaped silicone mold (affiliate link)
- knife and a toothpick
Begin by cutting up your melt and pour white soap base into small chunks, putting it in a microwave safe bowl and microwaving it until it just begins to melt (about 30 seconds). Stir it with a spoon and microwave another 10-15 seconds until it all melts. Be sure not to microwave it too much or it will begin to boil and get a bunch of bubbles in it.
Now that you have your melted base soap you can add your scent or essential oil, then pour about 1/4 of it into another bowl and add pinch or two of the black oxide powder and stir until you have a nice grayish black color and all the oxide has been combined with the soap.
Now that you have your two colors, use the spoon to fill the heart mold 3/4 full with the white soap base and then fill the rest of the way with the black. Use a tooth pick to gently but deeply swirl the two soaps together. You will want to make sure the toothpick gets all the way to the bottom and really swirls the two colors down to the bottom of the mold.
Once you have used up all your soap (or filled all the heart shapes), set the mold aside and let cool for about an hour or two. Or you can pop it in the fridge for 10-15 minutes. When the soap has set, un-mold the heart soaps. If you find that you didn’t marble the soaps enough, simply put them back in the mold and put the whole thing in the microwave and heat for another 10-15 seconds then swirl with the toothpick again and let cool again.
Now that you have your soaps, you can either leave them like this, or take a sharp (non-serrated) knife and gently and carefully cut the top face of the heart off and then slice little bits of the sides of the soap to create a faceted look. Cutting the soap like this will also expose the marbling inside the soap as well.
Just look how amazing they look! Almost like little heart shaped stones. I used a heart mold here, but you can use the same technique to create these marbled soaps in any shape you want or have a mold for. These are a perfect addition to your bathroom for Valentine’s day, but
wouldn’t they also look perfect all boxed up with a cute soap dish as a
house warming gift?
