Make your own Faux Terrazzo Clay Vases

filed under

Call it terrazzo or call it just plain abstract, these flower vases look like real ceramic, but are actually just made with polymer clay! It really is so much easier than you might think to make your own faux terrazzo clay vases. And look how pretty they are filled with flowers for spring. The best part is that you can easily customize the pattern to your preferred color palate, so if black, white, and gray are more your thing, just stick to those colors. Or how about shades of pink. Really anything goes and it will oh so pretty in the abstract terrazzo shapes.

Materials to Make your own Faux Terrazzo Clay Vases:

Polymer oven bake clay in white and a few colors of your choice
Rolling pin
X-acto knife
-Glass vase

Begin by rolling out a large piece of white clay just large enough to completely wrap around your glass vase. Then cut out pieces of colored clay in various shapes like triangles, squiggles, balls, and tiny sprinkle like shapes and lay them on the white clay in your pattern.

The smaller the pieces the better because as we roll the clay together, the shapes will spread. Once you have your design laid out, roll over the clay with the rolling pin and press the design into the white clay.

Next, pick up the clay and wrap it around your glass vase and press it to cover all of the glass. Use the rolling pin or your fingers to smooth out any bumps or lumps and make the seam smooth. Then use the X-acto knife to trim up the top and make it flush.

Once it is smooth and covered, place your glass vase on a baking sheet. Bake in a 300F oven for 15 minutes to set the clay. Remove the tray from the oven and let cool. Once cool, your faux terrazzo clay vases are ready to use. Since we started with a glass vase already, you can add water and fresh flowers to these without worrying about the water messing up the clay.

Hi, your vases are very funky.
I would love to have a go at making some…just wondering if you can suggest other types of pots that could be used as the insert. Would any type of ceramic or terracotta be ok?? Just thinking what can go in the oven??
Thanks and I will look forward to your reply 🙂

Do you leave the glass in the clay case when baked?

Yes! It becomes part of the final vase so that it can hold water and not leak.
