I figured out how to make toucan shaped soap you guys! Now I will give you fair warning that this project may not be for a beginning soap maker, but once you have the hang of layering soap, it really isn’t too bad. It just takes many layers to make, and a little patience! The mold that I used was actually a popsicle mold from the Target dollar spot. After my trip there last week to get these flamingos, I also picked up a few silicone popsicle molds to craft with. This toucan one worked perfectly for soap and I have another tutorial coming later this week with the cactus one. I can’t wait to show you what I made with that one! But for now, it’s time to make your own toucan shaped soap!

I mean, are you dying or what?!

Materials to Make Your Own Toucan Shaped Soap:

-Toucan silicone mold (from the Target dollar spot)
-Clear and White melt and pour soap (from the craft store)
-Pink, yellow, and black soap colorant (for the black I used black oxide colorant brick from here)
-Small microwave safe bowls
-Small spoon
-Pipette
–X-acto knife
-Spray bottle with rubbing alcohol

We will begin by adding our first color to the beak portion of the mold. So cut up about three to four 1″ cubes of clear soap and add a few drops of colorant. Microwave for 15 -30 seconds until the soap just melts. Use the pipette to drop the soap into the mold on just the tip of the toucan’s beak.

Let the first color harden and cool, the melt your second color just like the first. Spray the soap in the mold with the rubbin alcohol and then layer in the second color next to the first. Its okay if some of the soap pours over the side like mine did.

Let this second color harded and cool. It should only take about 5-10 minutes. Once cool, use the x-acto knife to cut off any excess soap that fell down past the beak. Just be sure not to cut through the silicone.

Next, melt three to four 1″ chunks of white soap. Spritz the beak with more rubbing alcohol and use the pipette to add white soap to the eye portion of the mold. Again, it is okay if the soap goes crazy and spreads around the mold. You just want to make sure that the soap is about 1/4″ thick at least. Let the white soap harden for 5-10 minutes and then use the knife to cut off the extra white soap and peel it away from the mold.

As you can see, it is okay to leave the white soap on the beak. This won’t show through at all. Now it is time for the black soap. Melt another batch of clear soap and add a small piece of black colorant block to the soap to create a deep black color. Spritz the soap in the mold with the rubbing alcohol and then pour in the black soap until it comes level with the beak.

Let this soap cool and get hard. The final step is to once again melt more white soap, this time you will want about 1/2 cup of white soap. Spritz the soap in the mold with rubbing alcohol one last time and pour a layer of white soap to completely cover the toucans. Let cool and harden and then your soap is ready to remove from the mold.

Once unmolded I used a pin to carve out a little eye shape into the toucans. As you can see it really is just a bunch of layering of soap. And while really not that difficult, it is more of an intermediate soap making process. But OMG, they are just too cute! And will be perfect in my guest bathrom for summer. Now don’t you want to try to make your own toucan shaped soap?!
