Make It – A Yarn Wrapped Wicker Placemat Clutch

filed under

Last week I had to make another run to Ikea to get yet another storage shelf to house my ever growing amount of craft supplies. While I was there, I found a super cute oval wicker placemat for $1.99, so naturally I bought it with the intention of turning it into a cute summer clutch. After playing around with the placemat and colorful yarn, the clutch was ready to fill and take out and about.

Yes, its a little crazy town with all that yarn, but I kind of like it! Plus, it is super simple to just weave the edges and leave out the yarn wrappings, so if you are a more subdued accessory carrier, that might be a better option for you.

The Supplies:

  • Oval wicker placemat (this one is from Ikea)
  • Yarn in a few colors
  • Yarn pom poms
  • Hot glue
  • Scissors

So, today’s tutorial is a little different as I actually made a video of the clutch making process. So check out the step by step below and then watch the video for a little visual tutorial.

Step 1. Fold the placemat in half and use yarn to weave the edges on each side together leaving a 4-5″ gap at the top.

Step 2. Weave and wrap yarn around the clutch and tie to secure each color.

Step 3. Hot Glue on pom poms.

Step 4. Fill with your favorite things and me on your merry way!

Be sure to let me know what you think of the video! It was my first time shooting with an actual camera and not just my phone. I think it isn’t bad, but definitely room for improvement. Would you all like to see more video tutorials?
