Do you want to know what one of the most versatile Christmas craft supplies is after plain round ornaments? Paper mache cones! Yes, you heard that right. The plain old paper mache cones are the perfect supply to make into all sorts of modern trees for your mantel or table top. In the past I have used them to make copper splatter painted modern Christmas trees as well as snow dotted cone trees. And this year I have not one but three (!) Christmas crafts using them! Today I am sharing the first of those three projects with these DIY glittery Christmas tree cones.
I was inspired by Glitterville and Stephen Brown’s use of glitter to create whimsical Christmas decor. In fact, I have several projects this year that incorporate glitter and I am here for it!
But in all seriousness, these cone trees are simple to make and can be created in any combo of colors to match your personal holiday decor.
Materials to make your own DIY Glittery Christmas Tree Cones:
- Paper mache cones in various sizes
- Acrylic craft paint in white
- Acrylic craft paint in an assortment of color to match your decor
- Iridescent glitter paint
- Paint brushes
Begin by painting your cone trees white, then use a flat edged small paint brush to free hand stripes around the cone. Leave a gap between the bands and feel free to switch between colors as you like. Now don’t worry if your lines aren’t perfect. That is the beauty of these cone trees. The shaky lines just add to the magical look of them I promise! If you look close, you will see my lines are no where near perfect.
Once you have your lines painted on, let the paint dry and then give it a coat of glitter paint to really add to that sparkle. Not only does the glitter paint give the trees that glam look, because the glitter is mixed in with the paint, it holds it is place, so no glitter will shed off.
